No less devastating on land than at sea, Deck Gun Crews add a deadly punch to armies. Whether obliterating tightly packed formations or singling lone targets, Deck Guns provide Sea Dogs with the fire power to breach heavy defences or sweep aside waves of enemies in the field.

Understanding the Statblock |
|
Mercenary - This unit will work for Crucible Guard, Cryx, Cygnar, Khador, or Protectorate.
Abilities
- Both models
-
Advance Deployment
-
Tough
- Reposition [3"] - At the end of an activation in which it did not run or fail a charge, this model can advance up to 3", then its activation ends.
- Gunner only
- Man-Sized - This model is treated as a small-based model and occupies the space from the bottom of its base to a height of 1.75".
- Mobile Artillery - When this model advances as part of its Normal Movement, it gains +1" movement for each Grunt in this unit within 2" of it at the start of its advance.
- Take Up - If this model is destroyed, you can choose a Grunt in this unit within 1" of it to be destroyed instead. Effects on this model expire, and it gains the effects on the chosen Grunt. Remove the Grunt from the table instead of this model. This model has the same number of unmarked damage boxes as the chosen Grunt.
Weapons
- Gunner
- Deck Gun - 12" range, 3" AOE, POW 13 ranged attack
- Hand Weapon - 0.5" reach, POW 3, P+S 8 melee attack
Theme Forces
- Other Factions
- Infernal players can use this unit in the Hearts of Darkness theme, but only if Crosse2 is leading the army.
- Furthermore, Mercenaries can be hired by other Factions. Normally those Factions' themes will have a limit on how many models they can hire. Refer to #Other Theme Forces, below.

Thoughts on Sea Dog Deck Gun
Sea Dog Deck Gun in a Nutshell
In a nutshell? It's a cannon, and it does what a cannon does. However it's not accurate, powerful, nor fast.
In The Talion Charter theme you can get two Deck Guns as a single freebie. That makes their "effective cost" 4 points, ie 1 point per model. (The logic being that the effective cost of a free model is the cost of the most expensive model you didn't get for free). One point per model for cheap and expendable models to contest, block charges, or even claim zones - it's not a terrible deal on paper. Despite this, the other Requistion options are often more preferrable - even at a two-for-one deal they're a very tough sell.
Combos & Synergies
- Non-casters
- Lord Rockbottom can give the deck gun coins to make it harder hitting. He should always have a better target for his coins than this thing, though.
- Master Gunner Dougal Macnaille gives it extra range for a turn
- Aiyana & Holt - moderately long ranged guns really work well with ranged ARM debuffs.
- Casters
- Captain Phinneus Shae makes it move faster
- Fiona the Black - a ranged ARM debuff, and if she can't get back arc channeling and her cultists aren't in range the crewman is an incredibly cheap model to sacrifice to channel through.
- Rahera - can help protect them from ranged threats and the Aoe shot is more likely to trigger Black Spot additionally this models benefits from her feat when the other better artillery option (commodore cannon) does not.
Drawbacks & Downsides
- It's an upgraded "Hand Cannon" placed on a large base at RAT 5. Unlike other weapon crews, it doesn't do anything unusual.
Tricks & Tips
- If you're going to use them, use them as a two-for-one Requistion option (and even that isn't recommended, as mentioned above). You should never pay their real points cost (3 points for a single Deck Gun) - you're probably better off spending those 3 points on Bloody Bradigan.

Rules Clarifications
|
Rules Clarification : Advance Deployment (Edit)
- Sometimes you can attach a WA or CA that doesn't have AD to a unit that does have AD. If you do, the attachment effectively gains AD and they can all advance deploy together. (Locked Thread)
|
Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)
|
Rules Clarification : Reposition (Edit)
- Models out of formation cannot move via Reposition. Refer to the "Out of Formation" rules in the core rulebook.
- End of Activation (Edit)
- You cannot resolve two end-of-activation movement effects (refer to "End of Activation Movement" in the core rulebook). For EOA stuff that doesn't involve movement, though, it gets a bit more murky:
- Some EOA abilities explicitly state your activation ends as part of resolving the ability (like Reposition), and some don't (like Refuge).
- Whether it is explicit it or not, by definition an EOA ability is the last thing you can do for that activation. For instance, if you resolve Refuge and then continue your activation to cast more spells, then you have not used Refuge at the end of your activation.
- You cannot do an "at any time" ability during or after triggering an EOA ability; you cannot cast spells, purchase additional attacks, use a mini-feat, etc.
- If you start resolving an EOA movement (such as Reposition) then you cannot trigger abilities that occur "at any time" (such as Go To Ground). Because you can't trigger it while resolving the EOA movement, and after the EOA movement your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling)
- For units: if any model in the unit starts resolving the unit's EOA movement, then no model in the unit can trigger an any-time ability. (Infernal Ruling)
- See also the training article: LPG - End of Activation.
|
|
Rules Clarification : Man-Sized (Edit)
- Despite being mounted on a large base, the model counts as a small-base for any and every rule. (Infernal Ruling)
- This includes Ranking Officers being able to join them. (Infernal Ruling)
- This includes being able to take them as a Requistion Option (if you have a Man-Sized solo in a theme that allows free solos). (Locked Thread)
- This includes abilities that only work vs small-based models (such as Consume, Trampling over them, etc). Those work just fine vs Man-Sized models.
- When drawing LOS it blocks LOS across the full width of its base (some players think you should swap it for a small proxy base when trying to draw LOS past the edge of its base ... don't do that).
- Since it only counts as a small-based model, it only blocks LOS to other small-based models. You can see medium and larger bases through it just fine.
|
Rules Clarification : Mobile Artillery - None yet. (Edit)
|
Rules Clarification : Take Up (Edit)
- If you use Take Up the attacking model cannot trigger anything that needs the attacker to "Destroy" a model (such as Alpha Hunter, Killing Spree, Berserk, etc). Although the model that was attacked reached the Destroyed step of the timing sequence, Take Up negates that entirely. (Infernal Ruling)
