Mercenary & Minion, Character Solo

Alten Ashley is a truly exceptional hunter of the great beasts stalking the wilds of western Immoren. His incredible skill is almost great enough to match his ego, but Alten's ability to bring down large game for his employers is too valuable to pass up.

Understanding
the Statblock

Mercenary - This model will work for Crucible Guard, Cygnar, Khador, or Protectorate.

Minion - This model will work for Circle, or Trollbloods.

Abilities

Weapons

  • Bucking Jenny - 14" range, POW 12 ranged weapon
    • Grievous Wounds - A model hit by this weapon loses Tough and cannot have damage removed from it for one round.
  • Sword - 0.5" reach, P+S 9 melee weapon
    • Grievous Wounds - As above.

Theme Forces

  • Other Factions
    • Infernal players can use this model in the Hearts of Darkness theme, but only if Crosse2 is leading the army.
    • Furthermore, Mercenary/Minion models can be hired by other Factions. Normally those Factions' themes will have a limit on how many models they can hire. Refer to #Other Theme Forces, below.

Thoughts on Alten Ashley

Alten Ashley in a nutshell

Altern Ashley is a ranged support solo, specialising in taking out enemy warbeasts. It is unusual to have Grievous Wounds on a ranged weapon, let alone one with such a long range, and this is what makes Alten special.

Early in MK3 Alten Ashley saw a lot of table time due to his Grievous Wounds ability combined with Monster Hunter let him cripple Gargantuans trivially (and he wasn't too bad vs Colossals either). Players complained on the forums. Wanting to protect the viability of colossals, PP made them immune to the effect. At the same time, they cranked up Alten's point cost to an absurd 6 points when they should have dropped it to 4 to reflect his reduced utility, so now he is only taken if he can be purchased for free in a theme list. His selling points are Grievous Wounds and his extra damage dice against warbeasts, but nobody is paying 6 for that. Missteps like these led to the creation of the Community Integrated Development process.

Combos & Synergies

  • Other models with Deadly Shots, Sniper, or Marksman contribute well to his monster hunter ability. Arcane Tempest Rifleman, Kell Bailoch, Efaarit Scouts, Widowmakers, or Eiryss1 are all excellent candidates.
  • Anything that can give him concealment to trigger Prowl.
  • Assassin casters, who want their target surely dead.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • He is mediocre against solos - however, they should not be his prime target.
  • He is adequately defended for a solo but, knowing his threat, the enemy will try to do everything to remove him.
  • Too expensive, he has reached a price level where people mostly will only consider him if he can be taken for free.
  • He often has to compete with other solos that offer better utility.

Tricks & Tips

  • Grievous Wounds prevents removal of damage, not just "heals", so Alten Ashley can prevent repairs to ... well, everything that isn't Massive or a Structure. Warjacks, warcasters, Exemplar Bastions ... you name it, Alten can Grievous Wound it.
    • He alone can severely decrease the effectiveness of Absyloina1's and Darius' feat.
    • He also stops healing from Snacking (though snacked models are still RFP).
  • Monster Hunter does damage on a hit, then you get your regular damage roll as well.
  • Go for the Spirit aspect; once you knocked it out, the warbeast can hardly do anything that requires forcing, and it also cannot be healed for a round. Tag a key warbeast again and again to prevent healing.
  • The same goes for arc nodes: 2 Arcane Tempest Riflemen, or Kell Bailoch can shoot out the arc node on most light warjacks, then Alten will deliver the Grievous Wound to counter any potential repair.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Grievous Wounds      (Edit)

  • GW prevents "repairs" as well as "heals".
  • It does not stop a warlock transferring damage, or stop the wounded model from being able to 'heal' someone else.
  • Does not affect models with the Massive rule.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Advance Deployment      (Edit)

  • Sometimes you can attach a WA or CA that doesn't have AD to a unit that does have AD. If you do, the attachment effectively gains AD and they can all advance deploy together. (Locked Thread)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Pathfinder      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Monster Hunter      (Edit)

  • Monster Hunter damage is in addition to your regular damage roll. It's not instead of your damage roll.
  • It is resolved before you make the regular damage roll (if you do it after, then you'd choose the same spiral you just rolled normal damage against and that would be unfair).
  • It will trigger "damaged by an attack" effects before your actual damage roll.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Prowl and/or Just a Tree?     (Edit)

  • Whether you can trigger this ability is a bit awkward;
    • As long as you have concealment you get Stealth ... even if the attacker ignores concealment (such as with Hunter).
    • If you're standing in a cloud, and the attacker "ignores clouds for LOS" (such as Bird's Eye) you get Prowl/Tree.
    • If you're standing in a cloud, and the attacker "ignores clouds completely" (such as Alchemical Mask) you don't get it. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Similar for standing in a forest.
  • If a debuff removes Stealth, Prowl/Tree do not reapply stealth... But this ruling is being rechecked. (Infernal Checking)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Stealth      (Edit)

  • Stealth models are not invisible and you can target them - you'll just auto-miss most of the time.
  • You can target them with a charge.
  • You can target them with an AOE, have it auto-miss and scatter, luckily land on top of them anyway, and that will hit them.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Reposition      (Edit)

  • Models out of formation cannot move via Reposition. Refer to the "Out of Formation" rules in the core rulebook.
  • End of Activation (Edit)
You cannot resolve two end-of-activation movement effects (refer to "End of Activation Movement" in the core rulebook). For EOA stuff that doesn't involve movement, though, it gets a bit more murky:
  • Some EOA abilities explicitly state your activation ends as part of resolving the ability (like Reposition), and some don't (like Refuge).
Whether it is explicit it or not, by definition an EOA ability is the last thing you can do for that activation. For instance, if you resolve Refuge and then continue your activation to cast more spells, then you have not used Refuge at the end of your activation.
You cannot do an "at any time" ability during or after triggering an EOA ability; you cannot cast spells, purchase additional attacks, use a mini-feat, etc.
  • If you start resolving an EOA movement (such as Reposition) then you cannot trigger abilities that occur "at any time" (such as Go To Ground). Because you can't trigger it while resolving the EOA movement, and after the EOA movement your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling)
  • For units: if any model in the unit starts resolving the unit's EOA movement, then no model in the unit can trigger an any-time ability. (Infernal Ruling)
  • See also the training article: LPG - End of Activation.
