Infernal Solo

Nowhere is the potential scope of infernal corruption more evident than with Eilish Garrity, the once affable arcanist of the Black River Irregular mercenaries. Eilish still sees in the mirror the man he once was. When speaking to outsiders, his charm can return, allowing him to present a smiling face to those who, moments later, are overwhelmed by his magic and offered to his infernal masters. He is addicted to power, with a thirst for hidden knowledge that has taken him down a path to disgrace and degradation. He greedily accepted the forbidden lore that was offered him and, in doing so, damned himself beyond redemption.

Abilities

  • Arcane Pulse - When this model is destroyed by an enemy attack, enemy upkeep spells on models within 8˝ of it expire.

  • Gate Walker - Once per activation, immediately after this model casts a spell, you can place this model anywhere completely within 5" of its current location.

Thoughts on the Eilish Garrity, the Dark Seeker

Eilish Garrity, the Dark Seeker in a Nutshell

Like many Infernalists, Eilish has sold his soul for arcane power. In fact, he is brimming over with it. He offers powerful support and upkeep removal tech to your forces. Hex Blast... is a good spell! Especially when he's rolling at an effective RAT 9 POW 14.5. Puppet Master... is also a good spell! And when things get down and dirty, he explodes in a torrent of arcane disruption and strips upkeeps off nearby enemy models.

Combos & Synergies

Like many of the things in the Infernals faction, Eilish solves a specific problem. However he does so by hitting much harder than you would otherwise expect. Gate Walker + Puppetmaster is a really strong combination with the Summon mechanic, allowing you to set up very aggressive Tormentors which will Countercharge for serious effect.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Hex Blast requires a direct hit to strip upkeeps, making it a poor solution into enemy lists with good anti-magic or high DEF.
  • Arcane Pulse requires an enemy to kill him, and does not trigger off sacrificing for essence nor Summoning. It can also be easily gotten around with non-attack damage, such as from Corrosion or Fire.

Tricks & Tips

  • Dark Power puts his magic ability at effectively 9 and the power of Hex Blast at effectively 15, so he strips upkeeps particularly well for a non-caster.
  • Gate Walker makes him hard to get into melee, and can be used offensively to Summon a beast in an especially awkward spot.
  • Park him in front of an enemy unit which relies on upkeeps to dish in melee and you will seriously mess up their charge.

Other

Trivia

  • Released with the Faction release (2019.06)
  • During the beta-testing that happened before the Faction release, PP hid the identity of Eilish2 from players. Players thought they were playtesting a model called Master Theurgist Gideon Asher, and Gideon's concept artwork was "unfortunatley not complete in time for CID". He was revealed via a "Wanted Poster" placed on Facebook in the week just before the Faction was released.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Arcane Pulse      (Edit)

  • Anti-Upkeep vs a unit (Edit)
    • If an upkeep is on a unit, then all you need to do is make it expire off any member of the unit and the spell will expire from the entire unit.
    • It doesn't matter if the target is in formation or not. (Locked thread)
    • However, if an upkeep is on a single model within a unit (such as Scything Touch) then you need to dispel it off that particular model to make it dispel. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Dark Power      (Edit)

  • Discard Die (Edit)
    • If you're discarding lowest or highest, you have to discard even if you want it for a critical hit.
For instance: if you discard "the lowest die", need 6+ to hit, and roll a 3, 3, and a 4 ... then you must discard one of the 3s, and you'll end up with a non-critical hit with the 3 + 4.

Rules Clarification : Gate Walker      (Edit)

  • Gate Walker triggers after the spell is fully resolved. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Gate Walker will not trigger if the spell is cancelled by Arcane Vortex. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Magic Ability      (Edit)

  • Combat Action
Nearly all Magic Ability spells require the spellcaster to use their Combat Action to cast the spell. As such it is not an "at any time" ability (like it is when warcasters/warlocks cast spells). This means ...
  • You must complete your movement before you use a MA.
  • A model in a unit cannot use its Combat Action to cast a spell until all members of the unit have completed their movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You cannot make initial ranged or initial melee attacks on the same turn you use a MA.
  • You cannot buy additional melee/ranged attacks after using a MA special attack. Refer to the core rulebook, "Special attacks listed as a rule of the model itself are neither melee attacks nor ranged attacks. The rules for these special attacks indicate the nature of any additional attacks that can be made afterward, if any."
  • You cannot use a MA on the same turn you charge. Because a charge must (almost always) be followed by a melee attack.
  • Non-Combat Action
There are a few models that can use a Magic Ability without using their Combat Action. These models get around all the restrictions listed above.
  • Models with Geomancy or Necromancy can use a Magic Ability at "any time" just like a warcaster/warlock.
  • Models with Battle Wizard or Necrophage can make melee attacks then get a bonus "free" spell.
  • Models with Combat Caster can cast a spell before charging, then do a normal charge + melee attack.
  • Note that Battle Wizards, Combat Casters, etc have the option to use their Combat Action to cast a spell. Their special rule is in addition to the normal spell casting, not instead of.

Rules Clarification : Marked Soul      (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Unarmed      (Edit)

  • Since this model has no weapons it does not have a melee range.
    • This means it can't engage other models, declare charges, or make free strikes
    • Also it can't gain abilities that require a melee range (such as Ragman granting this model Dark Shroud).
  • However, other models that do have melee weapons can engage this model. So this model can still gain the "target in melee" shooting bonus.

Rules Clarification : Hex Blast      (Edit)

  • If you miss and deviate onto a different target, no upkeeps or animi expire. You need a direct hit.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Puppet Master      (Edit)

  • Puppet Master can be put on a model in a unit, and it will be applied to the whole unit. However, as soon as any model in the unit chooses to use it then it expires on the entire unit (so really it only affects one model).
  • Puppet Master can be used on "secondary" damage rolls such as Electro Leap, Magic Bullet, etc.
  • It can't be used on "stay in play" damage effects like a Scather's AOE.
  • If the same player casts Puppet Master on the same model/unit multiple times it doesn't stack, at all. (Infernal Ruling)
  • If different players cast Puppet Master on the same target, then they both take effect. When one player uses the Puppet Master, the other does not expire. Both players can use Puppet Master on the same roll. (Infernal Ruling)
