Rorsh
Mercenary, & Minion, Farrow Character Solo - (Lesser Warlock)
Brine
Companion Farrow Heavy Warbeast

Rorsh cares nothing for goals or sides in the battles wracking western Immoren and offers his services for reasonable payment and no questions asked. He carries his lever-action pig iron and a fondness for explosives from one battlefield to the next. His greatest weapon is the gargantuan bipedal fighting boar Brine, whom Rorsh takes particular delight in unleashing to rend enemies limb from limb.

Mercenary - This model will work for Cryx, Cygnar, Khador, or Protectorate.

Minion - This model will work for Circle, Legion, Skorne, or Trollbloods.

Abilities

  • Tough symbol.jpg Tough
  • Diversionary Tactic (★ Action) - Center a 4" AOE on Rorsh. Models in the AOE other than Rorsh and Brine suffer a POW 6 blast damage roll. After these damage rolls are resolved, Rorsh can make a full advance. If Brine was in the AOE, he can make a full advance as well. Rorsh and Brine cannot be targeted by free strikes during this movement.
  • Farrow Warlock - This model can only have Farrow warbeasts in its battlegroup.
  • Feign Death - This model cannot be targeted by ranged or magic attacks while knocked down.
  • Lesser Warlock - 1) This model is not a warlock but has the following warlock special rules: Battlegroup Commander, Fury Manipulation, Healing, Spellcaster, and Transferring Damage. 2) This model must have at least one warbeast in its battlegroup at the start of the game.
  • Souie (★ Action) - If Brine is currently in this model's control range, Brine can immediately make a full advance toward this model.

Warbeast - All warbeasts share a huge stack of special rules. The short version is they're big, furious, and beat stuff up pretty good. Click here for a newbie-friendly recap, or click here for the full rules.

Abilities

  • Bacon - When this model is destroyed, each living warbeast B2B can remove d3 damage points.
  • Companion [ Rorsh ] - This model is included in any army that includes Rorsh. If Rorsh is destroyed or removed from play, remove this model from play. This model is part of Rorsh's battlegroup.
  • Extended Control Range - When checking to see if this model is in its controller's control range, double the range.
  • Pain Response - While damaged, this model can charge and make power attacks without being forced.
  • Retaliatory Strike - If this model is hit by a melee attack made by an enemy model during your opponent's turn, after that attack is resolved this model can immediately make one basic melee attack against that model. This model can make only one Retaliatory Strike per turn.

1 SELF - - Turn No
The spellcaster gains an extra dice on melee damage rolls against living models and Snacking. Pig Farm lasts for one turn.
Snacking - When a model with Snacking boxes a living model with a melee attack, it can choose to RFP the boxed model. When it does, the model with Snacking can remove d3 damage points.

Theme Forces

  • Other Factions
    • Infernal players can use this model in the Hearts of Darkness theme, but only if Crosse2 is leading the army.
    • Furthermore, Mercenary/Minion models can be hired by other Factions. Normally those Factions' themes will have a limit on how many models they can hire. Refer to #Other Theme Forces, below.

Thoughts on Rorsh & Brine

Rorsh & Brine in a nutshell

Imagine a ninja surronded by enemies, he throws a bomb at his feet and disappears in the explosion. Next thing he appears on the other side of the room stabbing his target through the neck. Now imagine that ninja is a pig the size of a warjack.

Brine is an extremely mobile beatstick, and Rorsh is his enabler. Diversionary Tactics + Extended Control Range + Brine charging = 14" non-linear threat range, and it's pretty easy to end that charge still in Rorsh's control range. Brine can really get places and then trash casters and heavy warbeasts (although not warjacks - Pig Farm doesn't help there).

Combos & Synergies

  • Battle Boar Because Primal is awesome on Brine if he's being used as a heavy missile. For that matter Primal is awesome when applied to Gator warbeasts like the Swamp Horror and this is how you do it.
  • Warlocks (or warcasters, as R&B are available in most themes in the game) with additional damage buffs or ARM debuffs. Brine's strength is that 14" nonlinear threat range; a damage buff beyond the animus lets him effectively initiate trades against warjacks. Arm debuffs also benefit Rorsh's boosted pig iron shots.
  • Gatorman Witch Doctor Pathfinder, Parry, and the ability to move through obstructions lets you get the most out of Brine's threat range and makes him very difficult to avoid. Gastonne2 and casters with Curse of Shadows can do the same.
  • Any model that can knock down Rorsh without hurting him, thereby preventing him from being targeted by ranged attacks. Shaking the knockdown the next turn leaves their mobility unimpeded.
  • Fiona loves models with long threat ranges to channel through, because that way she can get really juicy angles on enemy casters. You can also safely set up Pain Response with Dark Rituals by channeling through Rorsh and have him transfer to Brine (note that you can't channel through Brine directly as he's not a Warrior model). Curse of Veils also cranks up Rorsh's shooting, and they both benefit from the feat.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Pillow fisted against warjacks.
  • The effectiveness of Rorsh's Spell declines sharply against models with reach, is negated by pathfinder, and is pretty rarely useful anyway.

Tricks & Tips

  • Remember your retaliatory strikes. You have roughly a 1/9 chance of a crit knockdown on enemy heavies which is absolutely devastating when it happens. Reminding your opponents of this ability may lead to them using more activations to knock brine down and minimize that risk.
  • Against targets you cannot effectively damage, consider taking advantage of the hard head rule by slamming and boosting the the damage roll. Throwing targets is also viable as all power attacks are free under pain response.
  • Brine is a very cheap beast that can be launched at the first target of opportunity without regret. With the right buffs he is frequently able to trade up on points in the process.
  • Rorsh's shooting ability should not be underestimated, though he usually waits until after Brine has been delivered to use it. 2 boosted pow12 pig irons and potentially a third boosted 12 with a great aoe size does work.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Lesser Warlock and/or Draconic Consort     (Edit)

  • This model has a completely separate battlegroup to your main warlock.
    • Your main warlock cannot force warbeasts under this model's control (and vice versa).
    • Any spells/effects that apply to your main warlock's battlegroup (such as Warpath) do not apply to warbeasts under this model's control (and vice versa).
  • This model is a solo, and is not a warlock
    • It is affected by stuff which specifies "non-warlock models" (such as Seduction).
    • It is not affected by stuff which specifies "warlock" (such as Black Arts).
  • When this solo dies, any warbeasts they are controlling go wild exactly as if it was a warlock. (Infernal Ruling)
    • See this article for the Wild warbeast rules and how to re-tame them.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Farrow Warlock      (Edit)

  • This model cannot take control of wild non-Farrow warbeasts.

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Feign Death      (Edit)

  • "Cannot be targeted" is not the same as "cannot be hit". You can still be hit by AOEs, Sprays, etc that target someone else.
  • You cannot use Gunfighter vs models Feigning Death, because Gunfighter is still a ranged attack.
  • However, you can use Point Blank, because that lets the attacker make a melee attack with a ranged weapon.

Rules Clarification : Diversionary Tactic - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Souie - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Pigpen      (Edit)

  • "Treat Open Terrain as..." (Edit)
    • This ability doesn't change the terrain type, just how models treat it. (In comparison to, say, Rapid Growth which creates a forest.)
Because it doesn't change, models that get a benefit for being near terrain (ie the Earthborn Dire Troll) need to instead be inside the affected area to gain the benefit. If it's outside the area, then from its current point of view the area is open terrain.
    • If you have two overlapping effects like this (such as "treat open as rough" overlapping with "treat open as shallow water"), the area is treated as both terrain types.
    • If you then have a model that ignores one of the overlapping effects (such as Amphibious trying to treat shallow water as open terrain) they'll still suffer the effect they're not ignoring. (Infernal Ruling)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Open Fist  (aka, Power Attack Throw)     (Edit)

  • Throw ( Edit )
    • See also the Throw article for a recap of the core Throw rules.
    • If a model is somehow thrown at itself (which can happen with Durst1's feat) it would not move, it would be knocked down, and it would take a standard power attack damage roll but it would not take an additional die for colliding with itself. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Because you move the target model between the attack roll and the damage roll, you can get different buffs applied to the two rolls. For instance, if you throw the target in or out of a Flanking model's melee range.
  • Incorporeal vs Slammed/Thrown models ( Edit )
    • Incorporeal models cannot be moved by someone trying to slam them.
    • Slammed models can move through Incorporeal models.
      • If they have enough movement to get past them, no dramas.
      • If they land on them, you move the Incorporeal model out of the way as per the Rule of Least Disturbance.
      • If the Incorporeal model cannot be moved (i.e. it's a flag) then you move the slammed model out of the way, also by the rule of Least Disturbance.
      • For the purposes of Collateral Damage, only the model(s) you contacted before you applied the rule of Least Disturbance count as contacted.
    • The same logic applies to Throws.
  • Collateral Damage
    • Collateral damage cannot be boosted and is not considered damage from an attack or model. Refer page 33 of the 2021.08 version of the rules pdf. As a result:
      • It doesn't trigger stuff that relies on being hit by an enemy (such as Shock Field) or damaged by an enemy (such as Vengeance).
      • It doesn't get bonus damage from stuff that adds to a model's damage roll (such as Signs & Portents or Prey).
      • It doesn't matter if the attacker has crippled weapon systems or aspects.
  • Throw - Power Attack
    • When you make a Throw Power Attack, no other abilities of the Fist weapon (such as Chain Strike) are applied unless they specifically mention Throws. (Locked Thread)
    • If you do a Power Attack Throw and you choose to throw the target directly away, no deviation is rolled to determine the final position of the model. (Locked thread)
    • A model that cannot be targeted by melee attacks (such as Una2's feat) cannot have models thrown at them, either. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Since throwing Model [A] at Model [B] involves making a melee attack roll vs Model [B] which is out of your melee range, it technically breaks a whole bunch of core rules. (Infernal Checking)
    • Even though you make a "melee attack roll" vs Model [B] you don't actually make a melee attack vs it. Also, the damage it suffers is from Collateral damage, not from the original attack. So you can't trigger stuff like Snacking from damage you did to Model B.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Knockdown      (Edit)

  • Knockdown (Edit) - Remember, knockdown only prevents what it says it does. Refer to the Knockdown page for a recap of what a model can/can't do.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Hard Head      (Edit)

  • You can add the POW even if the weapon system is crippled.
  • Hard Head doesn't get applied to collateral damage, because that is a separate type of roll. Refer page 45 of the mini rulebook.

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Warbeast      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

See also the Warbeast page for a recap of the core warbeast rules.
  • Forcing
    • If an ability doesn't specify how much it costs to force, it costs 1. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Animi
    • A single Animus can be on several models at the same time. (Infernal Ruling)
    • Unlike in Mk2, in Mk3 if a model has an animus on it from any source and then another animus is cast on that model, it will lose the first instance of an animus and will be replaced by the second. It does not matter if either the first animus or the second animus is from a warlock or warbeast. (Infernal Ruling)
    • An animi cast by a warlock is an animi and a spell. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Transferring Damage
    • If both the warlock and the warbeast are damaged by the same attack (such as an AOE), then you need to apply the 'normal' damage to the warbeast before the transferred damage. This distinction can be important when you're working out who/what actually destroyed the beast. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Frenzy (Edit)
    • You cannot trigger optional abilities (such as Cleave or Sprint). (Infernal Ruling)
    • You must trigger compulsory abilities (such as Consume) ... except for compulsory abilities that also generate an extra attack (such as Berserk). In that case, you don't get the Berserk attack. (Infernal Ruling)
    • A warbeast may not make an Assault shot as part of a Frenzy activation.
    • If the closest target to a warbeast resolving a Frenzy cannot be charged, then the warbeast will forfeit movement and action (as per the rules of having to charge and not being able to). (Infernal Ruling)
    • If a frenzying warbeast can't reach its charge target (because the charge lane is blocked by terrain, etc) then it will make a failed charge and end its activation. (Locked thread)
    • If a frenzying warbeast has two melee weapons with the same POW, it can choose which one to use. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Bacon      (Edit)

  • Enemy warbeasts can benefit from Bacon. Everyone* loves bacon!
    • everyone does not include the undead.

Rules Clarification : Companion - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Extended Control Range and/or Long Leash - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Pain Response - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Retaliatory Strike      (Edit)

  • "Basic melee attack" also includes Mount Attacks. Refer to the definition of 'Basic Attack' in the rulebook.
  • You can't make Retaliatory Strikes vs free strikes, because the free striker is defined to be in your back arc (regardless of the actual model's facings) and thus you don't have LOS to it. (Infernal Ruling)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Pig Farm      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Snacking      (Edit)

  • You can use Snacking to RFP your target even if you're at full health. (Locked thread)
  • Snacking occurs at boxed, and thus:
    • Doesn't prevent abilities that trigger at disabled (such as Tough, Self-Sacrifice, etc).
    • Might prevent abilities that trigger at boxed, depending on who the active player is and whose model the ability triggered on. Refer the 'Triggers' section (pg 10 of the pdf)
    • Does prevent abilties that trigger at destroyed (such as collecting soul tokens, etc)
  • You can snack friendly models.
  • You may choose where each individual point of healing goes.
  • If you kill multiple models with a single attack (such as trampling over them) then you get to heal once for each model killed.
