Cygnar Trencher Solo

Not all trenchers stand on two legs. Many companies have one or more patrol dogs assigned to them - eager canine soldiers that go through their own rigorous trencher training. Patrol dogs assist the infantry in several ways, lending their keen senses and unquestioning loyalty to their unit

Alternative Fluff - Wow. Such bite. Many Trenchers. Much dodge.

Thoughts on Patrol Dog

Patrol Dog in a nutshell

It's a useful 1 point support solo - a bit of defensive boosting for when your trenchers get engaged, as well as couple of personal defensive buff, and a nice anti-stealth aura that will probably lead to his death after using it aggressively. He can’t break armour but he is annoying to kill and that has its own value when it comes to contesting points.

Being able to take a 2 post 2021 update for the same value a 1 pre update (and actually being allowed to take a 2nd dog) allows you to take more risks with his close range stealth removal.

Combos & Synergies

  • It can reload the Grenadier. No one is sure quite how...
  • Annoyance synergises well with Haley3's Temporal Distortion.
    • Effective DEF16 Trenchers and DEF17 with Dodge will give your opponents serious headaches in melee.
    • Even if they do hit the trencher, they still have Tough and Rise (in Gravediggers).

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • It doesn't hurt anyone.
  • Models that are dug in lose that benefit if they take advantage of Dodge.
    • Dodge has no down side to a trencher who is already engaged or one who can use Foxhole buddy to stand next to another trencher.

Tricks & Tips

  • At DEF 15 against living models in melee and two points it's often worth just running the Patrol Dog into enemy models and letting them try and hit it.
  • Be sure to keep him safe against stealth armies - he’s vital to keeping your ranged game effective against them, if only for one key turn.
    • Exploit Foxhole Buddy and consider keeping a Trench Buster nearby for added safety.
    • Siege2’s feat can also allow the dog to pull back to relative safety and dig in independently.

Trivia

  • Released in the Gravediggers expansion (2017.06)
  • Cygnar players brought out all of the Doge puns.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Knockdown      (Edit)

  • Knockdown (Edit) - Remember, knockdown only prevents what it says it does. Refer to the Knockdown page for a recap of what a model can/can't do.

Rules Clarification : Advance Deployment      (Edit)

  • Sometimes you can attach a WA or CA that doesn't have AD to a unit that does have AD. If you do, the attachment effectively gains AD and they can all advance deploy together. (Locked Thread)

Rules Clarification : Pathfinder      (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Annoyance - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Dodge      (Edit)

  • Dodge triggers after any missed attack - melee, ranged, or magic.
  • An enemy model with 2" melee range that is B2B with you before you Dodge, will be exactly 2" away afterwards, and thus will be able to attempt a 2nd melee attack.
  • If you're missed by an AOE attack, but it doesn't deviate very far and still hits you then: Dodge still triggers, but the AOE does damage before you get the Dodge movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • If an enemy can attack you when you advance and then stop moving (such as Countercharge or Defensive Strike) and they miss you, then you can trigger Dodge (because you're no longer advancing).
  • Dodge plus Riposte (Edit)
    • If a model has both Dodge and Riposte, you can choose whether to dodge or riposte first. Appendix A Step 13 applies here, because the controller of the model being attacked is not the active player.

Rules Clarification : Dig In and/or Foxhole Buddy     (Edit)

  • Unlike nearly every ability in the game, Dig In doesn't have a "expires after one turn/round" clause.
  • Thus you could spend your action on turn 1 to Dig In and (assuming you don't move or get engaged) stay Dug In on turn 2 and use your action to make ranged attacks.
  • Being pushed counts as moving. (Locked thread)
  • If a model with Dig In is added to play or returned to play, it does not count as "starting the game". It can't be put into play already Dug In. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You can use Dig In while you're in someone's back arc. You are engaging, but not engaged.

Rules Clarification : Leadership      (Edit)

  • If you have two Leaders handing out the same buff, then sometimes they stack (Bronzeback) and sometimes they don't (Exemplar Bastion). (Infernal Ruling)
    • See specific models for case-by-case Infernal Rulings.
  • If you have two Leaders handing out different buffs (such as Iona's Leadership giving Dodge, and the Wolf Rider Champion's Leadership giving Prowl) then the benefits do stack - they'll get both Dodge and Prowl. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Noisy - None yet. (Edit)
