Skorne Praetorian Character Unit

Once respected members of the warrior caste, the Praetorians now known as the Legends of Halaak spent the early years of their careers clashing with one another in house feuds. It was not until their houses were destroyed that Valgesh, Cidaar, and J’Deth would join forces and earn greater acclaim. When Supreme Archdomina Makeda overthrew Vinter, this trio of renowned warriors went west to offer their services to House Balaash.

Abilities

  • Entire unit
    • Defensive Line - While this model is B2B with one or more models in its unit, it gains +2 DEF against melee attacks and cannot become knocked down.
    • Relentless Charge - While advancing as part of a charge, this model gains Pathfinder.
    • Side Step - When this model hits an enemy model with an initial melee attack or a melee special attack, it can advance up to 2" after the attack is resolved.
  • Cidaar only
    • Defensive Strike - Once per turn, when an enemy advances into and ends its movement in this model's melee range, this model can immediately make one basic melee attack against it.

Weapons

  • Valgesh
    • Sword (x2) - 1" reach, P+S 10 melee weapons
      • Combo Strike (★ Attack) - Make a melee attack. Instead of making a normal damage roll, the POW of the damage roll is equal to this model's STR plus twice the POW of this weapon. (Giving a total P+S = 13)
      • Weapon Master symbol.jpg Weapon Master
  • Cidaar
    • Naginata - 2" reach, P+S 12 melee weapon
      • Weapon Master - As above
  • J'Deth
    • Mace (x2) - 0.5" reach, P+S 11 melee weapons
      • Combo Smite (★ Attack) - The model hit is slammed d6" directly away from this model. If the model hit has a larger base than the attacking model, it is moved only half the distance rolled. When resolving damage for this attack, the model hit suffers a damage roll with POW equal to the STR of this model plus twice the POW of this weapon. The POW of collateral damage is equal to the STR of this model. P+S 15 with the Combo
      • Weapon Master - As above

Thoughts on Legends of Halaak

Legends of Halaak in a nutshell

The Legends of Halaak are small based weapon masters - and they hit extremely hard. Valgesh (the leader) is the most expendable, offering little that skorne doesn’t already do, Cidaar (the female) has the job of standing between the 2 guys and protecting them with defensive strike and J'Deth's (hooded one) can combo strike in a way that can set up an assassination and be utterly game winning.

All in all they are fast moving and hard hitting pathfinders, doing almost everything. At less than 3 point per model, and multiple wounds and multiple attacks each with an absurd MAT. What's not to love?

Combos & Synergies

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Low model count. Which has several downsides
    • Smaller footprint on the battlefield - so less blocking of charge lanes (especially as you need to stay grouped)
    • Models that collect souls will be sad.
    • rarely worth dedicating an upkeep spell to.

Tricks & Tips

  • Sometimes you want to use defensive line, sometimes you want to spread out. Often you need to spread out and hide them during the advance, to avoid AOE's on the approach.
  • Valgesh wants to combo strike against anything ARM 16+ (with wounds) even when charging.
  • Lining up J'deth's combo smite to knock one model into another can have amazing rewards.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Combo Strike      (Edit)

  • You cannot make a Combo attack if the weapon is crippled. Refer "Crippled Systems" in the core rulebook.

Rules Clarification : Weapon Master - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Smite      (Edit)

  • This rule changed in Mk3 to no longer say it "adds the weapon's POW". It still does add the POW, however, because the whole section on calculating Slam damage was reworded in the main rulebook.
  • Smite is not a Power Attack Slam, it is just an attack which causes a model to be slammed. As such, you can smite friendly models.
  • You can trigger Critical Smite on a free strike.
  • If you Smite on a charge, then the slam damage will be boosted.
  • Chain Attack Smite only - Unlile the other versions of Smite, a Chain Attack one doesn't have the distance halved when a smaller base model smites a larger. The Knights Exemplar Seneschal is just that awesome.
  • See also the clarifications on being slammed

Rules Clarification : Defensive Line      (Edit)

  • You don't need to have the entire unit in B2B to get the bonus. Even just two models in B2B will give it to each other. Which way they're facing doesn't matter, either.
  • Defensive Line is 'always on' (unlike Shield Wall).
  • You can still get Defensive Line while knocked down.
  • Since models move in straight lines, it impossible to keep two models B2B while advancing. Thus you cannot benefit from Defensive Line while moving through acid clouds etc.
    • Unless you have an ability to move through models, like Tactician.

Rules Clarification : Relentless Charge      (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Side Step      (Edit)

  • You can't trigger Side Step by hitting friendly models.
  • You can't trigger Side Step from additional attacks that you buy, or out-of-activation attacks (such as free strikes).
  • If you have multiple initial attacks, you have to step after each one. You can't "save up" all your side steps then get a single big 4" or 6" move.

Rules Clarification : Officer      (Edit)

  • Even if they're not on the Officer's card, an Officer can give (and benefit from) any non-standard orders that are on the unit's card (such as Shield Wall). Refer main rulebook.
  • When the Officer dies, the Leader model becomes the new Unit Commander (you don't get to choose).
  • But if your unit doesn't include a Leader model, then you do get to choose any of the remaining models to be the new Unit Commander. You don't swap the model, but it may be worth putting a token down so you can tell that grunt apart.
