Skorne Unit

Bloodrunners have turned killing into an art and walk the narrow divide between assassin and warrior. The final release of death inflicted by their hands empowers them to flicker through shadows like phantoms. Working in tandem, a team of Bloodrunners scything through the enemy ranks looks like a macabre dance where it becomes impossible to discern one killer from another.”

Abilities

  • Pathfinder symbol.jpg Pathfinder
  • Stealth symbol.jpg Stealth
  • Ambush - You can choose not to deploy this unit at the start of the game. If it is not deployed normally, you can put it into play at the end of any of your Control Phases after your first turn. When you do, choose any table edge except the back of your opponent's deployment zone. Place all models in the unit in formation completely within 3" of the chosen table edge.
  • Anatomical Precision - When this model's melee damage roll fails to exceed the ARM of the living model hit, that model suffers 1 damage point. A model disabled by a melee attack made by this model cannot make a Tough roll.
  • Apparition - During your Control Phase, place this model anywhere completely within 2" of its current location.
  • Gang - When making a melee attack targeting an enemy model in the melee range of another model in this unit, this model gains +2 to melee attack and melee damage rolls.
  • Reposition [3"] - At the end of an activation in which it did not run or fail a charge, this model can advance up to 3", then its activation ends.

Thoughts on Paingiver Bloodrunners

Paingiver Bloodrunners in a nutshell

Paingiver Bloodrunners are an advance deploying unit of skirmishers whose job it is to kill other advance deploying units of skirmishers. They struggle to hurt anything that's not either a trooper or solo - but they have an excellent threat range and tech to ensure that they can shank skirmishers and remain relatively safe. In a shooting-heavy metagame Stealth and their high threat range really helps, as does the ability to jump back behind walls and obstacles. And as shield walls are the safest infantry in the current shooting heavy meta their Anatomical Precision can be really useful. (Metagames differ of course). Also at one point each these are an amazing bargain

Combos & Synergies

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • They don't hit hard at all. Gang allow them to threaten single wound infantry, solos, and maybe the odd high-def, low-arm beast or jack, but don't expect them to take on MoW or protectorate jacks.
  • Terrible ARM - they die to blast damage, and need to bunch up for gang and because of their melee range.
  • Their only way out of melee without taking free strikes is Apparition or running Morghoul2.
  • Ambush is a trap as you can't Apparition and Ambush giving them a surprisingly low threat range.

Tricks & Tips

  • Reposition allows you to hide behind solid objects or trees too deep into a forest to be seen - and Apparition to jump out from behind them before charging.
  • Reposition and Gang work really well together, spreading you out after using Gang before blast damage gets you.
  • high mat, gang, and their veteran leader allow them to hit thoses annoying def 14-16 targets.
  • Because of their high melee skill and gang, they are much more dangerous to most warcasters than normal infantry of that cost.

Trivia

  • The Paingivers are inspired by Japanese ninjas with generous helpings of sadistic fetishes thrown in.
  • Released in Hordes: Metamorphosis (2009)

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Advance Deployment      (Edit)

  • Sometimes you can attach a WA or CA that doesn't have AD to a unit that does have AD. If you do, the attachment effectively gains AD and they can all advance deploy together. (Locked Thread)

Rules Clarification : Pathfinder      (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Stealth      (Edit)

  • Stealth models are not invisible and you can target them - you'll just auto-miss most of the time.
  • You can target them with a charge.
  • You can target them with an AOE, have it auto-miss and scatter, luckily land on top of them anyway, and that will hit them.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Ambush      (Edit)

  • If you attach a WA or CA to this unit, and the attachment doesn't have Ambush, then they all get to Ambush anyway. (Locked Thread)
  • Ambush and Apparition both occur at Step 5 of the Control Phase. However, Ambush specifies the "end" of the Control Phase so you cannot use Apparition on a model that Ambushes. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Declaring Ambush:
    • Choosing whether a unit deploys normally or ambushes needs to happen before deployment.
So it goes: do the starting roll, Player 2 chooses sides, Player 1 declares Ambushes (if any), then Player 2 declares Ambushes (if any), then Player 1 starts deployment. (Infernal Ruling)
    • If you have both Prey and Ambush, then you declare your Prey target at the normal time (even though the Prey-er isn't currently on the table). (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Blight Storm and/or Anatomical Precision and/or Affliction     (Edit)

  • With an AOE, only the model directly hit by the AOE will take auto-damage, other models in the AOE take normal damage.
  • You don't get auto-damage on stuff which isn't an attack, like Electro Leap and Flak Field.
  • If someone is immune to damage, you can't trigger the auto-damage vs them. Because you never got a damage roll in the first place. (Infernal Ruling)
  • When this ability is triggered by a spell (ie Blight Storm or Affliction) then that does not change the source of the damage to the caster, nor change the damage type to magical.
It merely changes the result of a damage roll. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Apparition      (Edit)

  • Apparition is an "Other" Control Phase effect, so it happens at Step 7 of the Control Phase.
    • It happens after paying for upkeeps, Power Up, etc
    • If you have another "Other" Control Phase effect, you get to choose the order to resolve them.
  • If a model is B2B with you when you use Apparition then they will be exactly 2" away afterwards. So you'll still be in the melee range of anything with RNG 2 or higher.
  • Unit members must always be placed in formation. Refer to the "Placed" section of the core rulebook.
    • If a trooper can't be placed in formation (because it's more than 2" out of formation to begin with) then it can't be placed at all.
    • The unit commander is always "In Formation" by definition, so can be placed where it likes.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Gang and/or Gang Fighter and/or Tag Team and/or Team Effort     (Edit)

  • You can gain the Gang bonus on free strikes, but generally only the first "Ganger" will get it.
For example, if a target is engaged by two models with Gang, when it leaves the melee range of the first Ganger it suffers a free strike with the Gang bonus. Then it leaves the melee range of the second and suffers a normal free strike.

Rules Clarification : Reposition      (Edit)

  • Models out of formation cannot move via Reposition. Refer to the "Out of Formation" rules in the core rulebook.
  • End of Activation (Edit)
You cannot resolve two end-of-activation movement effects (refer to "End of Activation Movement" in the core rulebook). For EOA stuff that doesn't involve movement, though, it gets a bit more murky:
  • Some EOA abilities explicitly state your activation ends as part of resolving the ability (like Reposition), and some don't (like Refuge).
Whether it is explicit it or not, by definition an EOA ability is the last thing you can do for that activation. For instance, if you resolve Refuge and then continue your activation to cast more spells, then you have not used Refuge at the end of your activation.
You cannot do an "at any time" ability during or after triggering an EOA ability; you cannot cast spells, purchase additional attacks, use a mini-feat, etc.
  • If you start resolving an EOA movement (such as Reposition) then you cannot trigger abilities that occur "at any time" (such as Go To Ground). Because you can't trigger it while resolving the EOA movement, and after the EOA movement your activation has ended. (Infernal Ruling)
  • For units: if any model in the unit starts resolving the unit's EOA movement, then no model in the unit can trigger an any-time ability. (Infernal Ruling)
  • See also the training article: LPG - End of Activation.
