The 101 series is intended to help you understand the rulebook, but you shouldn't be reading this instead of the rulebook.


When you're talking about a model being "within" another thing there are 4 types:

  1. Models "currently within" range of each other.
  2. Models "while within" range of each other.
  3. Models within a piece of terrain.
  4. Models within a scenario zone.

Furthermore, models can be "completely within" (their entire base is in range) or just "within" (only some of their base is in range).

Currently Within (Pulse)

When you trigger a special rule that uses the phrase "currently within", it means you measure who is in range the instant you triggered it. Those are the models affected, and the only models affected. They will stay affected even if they move in/out of range later in the turn.

Players often call these types of special rules a "Pulse".

Pulse Example: Deneghra1's feat, The Withering
Enemy models currently in Deneghra's control range suffer -2 SPD, STR, MAT, RAT, DEF, and ARM. The Withering lasts for one round.
Deneghra1's feat is a 'pulse'. When she uses her feat you immediately determine who is currently in her control range. Those models and those models only will be affected. Models can move into her control range after she has feated and will not suffer anything, and vice versa if affected models move out of her control range.

While Within (Aura)

When you trigger a special rule that uses the phrase "while within", it means you measure who is in range every time it is relevant, if ever. (For instance, if it's an ARM aura you would check to see if a model is in range only when you roll damage vs that model.) As models move around later in the turn, who is affected / unaffected can change (which is why you need to remeasure it).

Players often call these types of special rules an "Aura".

Aura Example: Stryker1's feat, Invincibility
While in Stryker's control range, friendly Faction models gain +5 ARM for one round.
Stryker1's feat is an 'aura'. Models can move into his control range after he has feated and will gain the benefit, and vice versa if they move out of his control range. What you need to do is check his control range each time you make a damage roll (because that is when the ARM buff becomes relevant).

Terrain

Terrain comes in two types: "Object terrain" that models cannot enter (such as walls, buildings, etc) and "Area terrain" that models can enter (such as forests, water, etc).

  • To gain the terrain bonus from Object terrain, a model has to be within the correct range. This is normally 1" (as measured from the attacker).
  • To gain the terrain bonus from Area terrain, a model has to be completely within the terrain.
However, to suffer a terrain penalty you just have to be within the terrain.

Scenario Zones & Flags

To control or contest a Zone, your model just needs to be within the zone. If it's a unit, all models in the the unit need to be within the zone.

To contest a Flag, you just need any single model within 4" of the flag. To control a Flag, you need a solo base to base with the flag.

Since you don't need to be fully within these areas, players will often declare a model is "toeing the zone" which means they are placing the model just barely overlapping the zone. Enough to contest, but no more than necessary.
