Retribution Solo

Lys healers embrace both spirituality and anatomical knowledge in equal parts. Before the Retribution drew Ios into conflict with the nations of men, Lys healers spent much of their time mending incidental injuries or driving illnesses from the bodies of their fellow elves, but war has forced them to the front lines where their ability as physicians is in high demand.

Thoughts on Lys Healer

Lys Healer in a nutshell

The Lys Healer can provide something for everyone. She can heal your warcaster, solos and leader unit attachments with multiple damage boxes. She can prevent most of the pop&drop tricks, namely knockdown or stationary spells/effects/feats, and she can negate continuous effects and animi to level the playing field. Move to Assist offers great versatility, and gives you more space if you intend to play her a bit on the offensive side with Purifying Prayer. She can also prevent enemies like the Cryx or some Skorne from gaining Retribution soul tokens. Worth the meagre points to field one, and especially a free card to get 2 of them in any of the themes where she's allowed.

Combos & Synergies

  • Any caster with squishy ARM but solid DEF could always do with a no Knockdown or Stationary bubble to chill in.
  • Shield Guards (Fane Knight Guardian for added caster protection or an Aspis) can keep her company, usually close to the caster.
  • The House Shyeel Artificer can give her a bit of coverage from Force Wall, but more generally Adeptis Rahn can keep blast damage away, too.
    • Speaking of Rahn, if you want to slam your own target forward with Force Hammer (eg. to contest a zone), and don't want it to be knocked down, send up the healer to the estimated landing zone with Power of Faith. Don't forget, if you want to activate the model later, you still must forfeit its Movement or Action.
  • Combo with the Ryssovass Defenders to give them no-knockdown Tough even when not in a base-to-base formation.
  • Combo with Goreshade4's Dauntless Resolve, to make any unit no-knockdown tough.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • She has no attacks, not even spells, that can damage the enemy.
    • Due to Purifying Prayer she has some indirect offensive capabilities though - see Tricks and Tips.
  • She has 3 very useful (★ Action)s, but can do only one per turn.
  • It takes some time to learn to keep her at the best distance from the rest of your army: close enough to get the benefit of Move to Assist and reap the benefit of her auras, but far away so she won't be killed easily. Often you'll be forced to brick up to block LOS to her.

Tricks & Tips

  • Move to Assist offers you safer play than with most other healers/repairers in the game, as you don't have to be near the units you want to buff. This can save the Healer from a lot of indirect attacks and scattering templates. The Defenders of Ios theme further boasts her mobility with the extra reposition.
  • Purifying Prayer can be crippling against Hordes armies who rely on certain animi to remain effective. Prime example are Snapjaw's Submerge, Rapid Healing, Spiny Growth or Safeguard. If the enemy allows you to trigger Move to Assist, you can cleanse these animi up to 20" away.
    • The continuous effect remove won't come to play too often, but you can severely reduce the effectiveness of models with Fire's Fury.

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Unarmed      (Edit)

  • Since this model has no weapons it does not have a melee range.
    • This means it can't engage other models, declare charges, or make free strikes
    • Also it can't gain abilities that require a melee range (such as Ragman granting this model Dark Shroud).
  • However, other models that do have melee weapons can engage this model. So this model can still gain the "target in melee" shooting bonus.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Heal and/or First Aid     (Edit)

  • This ability doesn't target, so you can use it on models behind you.
  • When Heal is used as a magic ability, it bypasses anti-spell stuff that hinge on the word "target" (such as Spell Ward or Arcane Vortex).

Rules Clarification : Move to Assist - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Soul Ward      (Edit)

  • Soul Ward overrides "collects the soul regardless of proximity" abilities (such as Dark Fire).
  • The model being destroyed has to be in your CMD range. The location of the enemy model itself is irrelevant - they could stand inside your CMD range, and destroy something outside your CMD range, and not be affected.

Rules Clarification : Magic Ability      (Edit)

  • Combat Action
Nearly all Magic Ability spells require the spellcaster to use their Combat Action to cast the spell. As such it is not an "at any time" ability (like it is when warcasters/warlocks cast spells). This means ...
  • You must complete your movement before you use a MA.
  • A model in a unit cannot use its Combat Action to cast a spell until all members of the unit have completed their movement. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You cannot make initial ranged or initial melee attacks on the same turn you use a MA.
  • You cannot buy additional melee/ranged attacks after using a MA special attack. Refer to the core rulebook, "Special attacks listed as a rule of the model itself are neither melee attacks nor ranged attacks. The rules for these special attacks indicate the nature of any additional attacks that can be made afterward, if any."
  • You cannot use a MA on the same turn you charge. Because a charge must (almost always) be followed by a melee attack.
  • Non-Combat Action
There are a few models that can use a Magic Ability without using their Combat Action. These models get around all the restrictions listed above.
  • Models with Geomancy or Necromancy can use a Magic Ability at "any time" just like a warcaster/warlock.
  • Models with Battle Wizard or Necrophage can make melee attacks then get a bonus "free" spell.
  • Models with Combat Caster can cast a spell before charging, then do a normal charge + melee attack.
  • Note that Battle Wizards, Combat Casters, etc have the option to use their Combat Action to cast a spell. Their special rule is in addition to the normal spell casting, not instead of.

Rules Clarification : Power of Faith - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Purifying Prayer      (Edit)

  • This ability affects models/units. So if any model from a unit is within command range, then animi/continuous effects expire off every model in the unit. (Infernal Ruling)
