Thoughts on House Ellowuyr Wardens

House Ellowuyr Wardens in a nutshell

Wardens are the heavy armor / heavy weapon shock troops of House Ellowuyr. The danger-chonk cousins to the House Ellowuyr Swordsmen. They are a simple-to-use, straight forward melee unit with very strong stats, especially in offense and armour. Versus their brothers they trade bodies for durability, with an awesome crit effect.

Roughly they do the same thing as unit of Ellowuyr Swordsmen and depending on if you prefer quantity or quality will probably decide which you want. But if a player wants to bring both, they can, if they want to bring one type of unit, we want these two units to both look appealing. The two units fulfill roughly the same role, just in slightly different ways.

Thoughts on the WA

The main drawback of the Soulless Escort is that while it protects versus spells it’s low defence makes it a magnet for AOEs, electro leaps and the like. Being the same defence as the Warders (and the armour of the Warders versus other options) mitigates this considerably.

Combos & Synergies

  • House Ellowuyr Warden Executioner - Grants them Side Step.
  • Lys Healers - They can heal them, and make them Steady.
  • Elara1 - She gives them Ghost Walk regardless of caster input.
  • Goreshade4 - He delivers them expertly with his cloud wall, Ghost Walk and Daunless Resolve. DR makes them ARM 21 with Tough, ARM 23 in melee. Revive is also great on a multi-wound models, and you can heal the revived model with Lys Healers. Hand of Ice and Light of Wrath fix damage and hitting, once they got to the frontlines.
  • Issyria - Crusader's call makes them faster and Inviolable Resolves makes them ARM 20, the feat facilitates Critical Amputations.
  • Garryth1 likewise has an ARM buff and fixes their damage to boot.
  • Ravyn1 - Veil of Mist lets them move through other models and Parry lets them ignore free strikes, so you can send them through the enemy frontline to harass backliners.
  • Elara2 - Her feat grants them Ghost Walk and Boundless Charge, so with it and Parry they can go far and go deep.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Unlike the small based brother they don't have any defensive tech versus guns meaning they will get shot to death if you don't screen them.
    • you can get around this by treating them as a second wave cleanup crew.
  • They need help mitigating terrain.
  • Their critical effect doesn’t work on horrors, battle engines or warriors.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Parry - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Cleave      (Edit)

  • Cleave doesn't trigger off free strikes or Impact Attacks, since those occur outside of your Combat Action.
  • Despite "additional attacks" normally occurring only after all initial attacks are resolved, Cleave "interrupts" your initial attacks because it must be resolved immediately.
  • You cannot trigger an "Any Time" ability between the first attack and the Cleave attack, because Cleave occurs at Step 14 of Apdx A, and "Any Time" abilities cannot be triggered until after Step 14 is finished.
  • Attack-Generating Abilities (Edit)
    • From the core rulebook: When a model is granted more attacks as a result of an attack it made, it gains only one. If two or more special rules would grant the model another attack as a result of making an attack, its controlling player chooses which special rule to apply.
    • If you trigger two attack-generating abilities (such as Black Spot and Kill Shot) you choose to resolve one and "lose" the other (unless you trigger it again later).
    • If you trigger two attack-generating abilities, and one of them is compulsory (such as Black Spot and Berserk), you must choose to resolve the compulsory one. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Set Defense - None yet. (Edit)
Rules Clarification : Unyielding - None yet. (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Amputation      (Edit)

  • Amputation triggers after you've marked normal damage. So it goes: Roll damage ; mark damage ; fill in unmarked boxes/circles.(Infernal Ruling)
  • Amputation doesn't do anything if no boxes are filled in / the attack deals no damage. (Infernal Ruling)
