Trollblood Barrage Solo

Many worshippers of Dhunia have united under the leadership of Brigadier General Gunnbjorn to fight back the infernal invasion ravaging their lands. Gunnbjorn was sure to organize those who aided his cause into a proper military, which required a disciplined chain of command. This included training gunnery sergeants to coordinate the mass artillery fire the Dhunian army is capable of unleashing upon their foes.

Abilities

  • Tough symbol.jpg Tough
  • Ancillary Attack (★ Action) - RNG 3. Target friendly Faction Weapon Crew. If the Weapon Crew is in range, it immediately makes one basic melee or ranged attack. A Weapon Crew can be targeted by an Ancillary Attack special action only once per turn.
  • Artillerist (★ Action) - RNG CMD. Target friendly Faction model gains +2 RAT when making its next AOE ranged attack this turn. If the attack does not directly hit, you can reroll the direction and/or distance of its deviation. Each roll can be rerolled only once as a reasult of Artillerist.
  • Spyglass (★ Action) - Target an enemy model in this model's LOS. That model loses Stealth for one round.
  • Veteran Leader [ Faction weapon crew units ] - While in this model's command range, Faction weapon crew units models gain +1 to attack rolls.

Weapons

20 1 - 14
  • Cumbersome - This model cannot attack with this weapon and with another weapon on the same activation.
  • Ground Pounder (★ Attack) - Place a 4" AOE anywhere completely within this weapon's RNG that is in this model's LOS. This model makes one ranged attack roll against each model in the AOE, ignoring concealment and Stealth. This model does not gain a bonus for aiming when resolving a Ground pounder attack. Models do not gain the target in melee DEF bonus when resolving Ground Pounder attack rolls. Models hit suffer a ranged attack damage roll equal with a POW equal to the POW of this weapon. Ground Pounder attacks are simultaneous.
  • Inaccurate - This model suffers -4 to attack rolls with this weapon.
  • Limited Scope - This weapon can make only special attacks.

Thoughts on Trollkin Gunnery Sergeant

Trollkin Gunnery Sergeantin a nutshell

The Gunnery Sergeant provides loads of value to ranged heavy lists, but especially to weapon crews. Capable of stripping Stealth from a single model, providing Artillerist, or even dropping a RNG 20 (!) ground pounder from across the board, this solo has tons of utility. That said, his most common use, we've found, is in his Ancillary Attack for weapon crews.

He oddly has slightly higher defence that your standard Troll and his armour is respectable under the Krielstone so he can take a bit of effort to remove. Although he struggles to hit anything with his long gun he can always do something and make his presence known as it has such a long range and can be used even if your weapon crews are out of range/dead. For 3 points you could do a lot worse than the Gunnery Sergeant.

Combos & Synergies

  • Weapon Crews obviously, for Ancillary Attack and Veteran Leader. Artillerist can be used on anything with an AOE attack though.
  • Gunnbjorn2 - Gunny loves himself some weapon crews, the Farrow Razorback Crew especially. Together they can make a crew shoot trice.
  • General Thunderstone Brug combine the above interaction with Deadly Precision.
  • Splatter Boar or Dozer & Smigg - Artillerist and Luck Shot are two differently named abilities, so you can stack them even if they do functionally the same thing. + 4 RAT and two rerolls on deviation can be really nifty, if clock intensive.
  • Grissel2 or Thumper Crews can knock down targets at range for him to reliably Ground Pound.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Squishy.
  • The Artillery Strike has serious problems hitting, between the -4 to hit and the inability to aim it. It also can't scatter and hope for blast damage. So unless your target is knocked down or you have to-hit buffs through the wazoo, all you'll achieve by firing it is burning your own clock.
  • The Veteran Leader is FF only, so it won't affect Minion weapon crews (except in the Vengeance of Dhunia theme).

Tricks & Tips

  • Spyglass has no range restriction, you just need LOS.
  • Placing the Ground Pounder template:
    • The LOS requirements for placing the template are a bit counterintuitive, and the explanation is longwinded. See the Rules Clarifications section for details.
    • One of the useful tricks of this counterintuitive-ness is how you can "shoot around corners" because only part of the template needs to be in LOS, not the whole thing. (In fact it's impossible to have it entirely in LOS, because as soon as it overlaps a model the overlapped area is out of LOS.)
    • A second useful trick is "shooting the back of a cloud/forest" where you place the near edge of the AOE as deep in the cloud/forest as possible, and the far edge overlapping models behind the cloud/forest.
This is particularly useful vs models that like to create cloud walls then Reposition out of them, such as Trencher Infantry.

Rules Clarifications

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Ancillary Attack      (Edit)

  • You can't generate bonus attacks (such as Berserk) from an Ancillary Attack, because those bonus attacks are limited to during the attacker's activation.
    • Or, at least, I can't think of a single example which isn't limited.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Artillerist and/or Lucky Shot and/or Spotter     (Edit)

  • This ability doesn't work on weapons with AOE (★) weapons (such as Old Witch2). (Infernal Ruling)
  • Roll both direction and distance before choosing which you want to reroll (if any), then reroll those.
    • This means that if you choose to re-roll only one die, and after re-rolling that one die you now want to re-roll the other die ... too bad.
    • (Mk2 2010 Infernal Ruling) which Dark Legacy confirmed in 2021 via Facebook (which I won't link to)
  • If you have two rerolls, you repeat the above process twice. Roll, choose which to re-roll (if any). If you still don't like the result, choose which ones to re-roll a second time. You can even change which one you re-roll.
Again, confirmed via Facebook (which I won't link to)

Rules Clarification : Spyglass and/or Periscope     (Edit)

  • This ability essentially has infinite range.
  • Lose vs Gain (Edit)
    • Enemy models can still regain Stealth after you use this spell/ability. It lacks the "and cannot regain it" clause. (Locked thread)
    • (In comparison, see Marked for Death which does prevent models regaining stuff.)
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Veteran Leader      (Edit)

  • Veteran Leaders don't give themselves the buff, because of the "other models within ..." clause. However, if you have two models giving out the buff, then they can give it to each other. (Locked thread)
  • If a model can get Veteran Leader from two sources (such as Vet Leader [Winterguard] simultaneous with Vet Leader [Assault Kommandos]) then the benefit does not stack. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Some versions say "friendly" and some don't. Regardless, Veteran Leader only buffs friendly models. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Cumbersome - None yet. (Edit)

This Ground Pounder position is not legal because Siege doesn't have LOS to the template.
Even though Siege has LOS to the colossal, the Ground Pounder position is still not legal because Siege still doesn't have LOS to the template.
Even though the forest is gone, the Ground Pounder position is still not legal because Siege still doesn't have LOS to the template.

Rules Clarification : Ground Pounder      (Edit)

  • Short version:
    • You need to have at least one tiny piece of the template in your LOS.
    • Models of all sizes block your LOS when you're trying to place the template.
    • But once the model is covered by the template, you get to attack it whether or not you have regular LOS to it.

Placing the template

  • If you have a method of drawing LOS to the models that you're about to Ground Pound (such as them being a huge-base model, or you casting Mage Sight on them), that doesn't help at all with placing the template. You're essentially trying to get LOS to a point "on the table", not to a model. (Infernal Ruling)
  • You need to be able to draw LOS to at least one point of the AOE. It doesn't need to be the centrepoint. This allows you to "shoot around the corners" of LOS-blocking terrain. (Infernal Ruling)
  • Models of all base sizes block LOS to the template. (Infernal Ruling)

Making the attacks

  • Ground Pounder does not target, so it can bypass stuff like Feign Death.
  • Ground Pounder ignores concealment, but not cover.
  • If you use Ground Pounder to "shoot around a corner" as described above, all models in the template will get attacked even if the terrain completely blocked LOS to them. (Locked thread)
  • Unlike normal AOE attacks, all hits are direct hits, so your opponent can use stuff like Sacrificial Pawn on any of them.
  • Although it uses the AOE template it's not actually an AOE attack, so the attacking model is considered the point of origin of the attack (for the purposes of stuff like Shield Wall).
