Minion, & Circle Partisan, Tharn Character Solo

Kogan was a proud Tharn warrior who, like the rest of his tribe, managed to survive the apocalypse unscathed. While hunting in the wastes, Kogan had an unfortunate encounter with a large armored bear, which managed to tear his arm off before running away with it. It should have been the end of Kogan then and there, but as he lay bleeding out, he was discovered by another scavenger crew that took pity on him.

The crew nursed Kogan back to health while their mechanik built Kogan a new mechanikal arm out of scrap parts. Gracious for what they had done for him, Kogan spared the crew instead of bringing them back to his tribe as a meal. When Kogan returned, his tribe immediately spurned him for the metallic monstrosity that had replaced his natural arm.

They claimed he had defiled their tradition and god, and they cast him out. Exiled, Kogan now wanders the wastes as a lone survivor, but one who has had his eyes opened to the world around him. He isn’t trusting of many outsiders, but he is willing to give most a fair chance before deciding if they are a potential ally or his next meal.

Riot Quest - Although this model has rules which allow it to be played in Warmachine and Hordes, it was primarily designed for the Riot Quest boardgame. RQ is set in an alternate and/or future timeline where the Infernals won the war. Some of the RQ models are slightly more goofy than their WMH equivalents.

Minion - This model will work for Circle.

  • PartisanCircle ] - When included in a Circle army, this model/unit is a Circle model/unit instead of a Minion model/unit.

Abilities

  • Pathfinder symbol.jpg Pathfinder
  • Tough symbol.jpg Tough
  • Heart Eater - When this model destroys a living or undead enemy model with a melee attack, it gains the destroyed model's corpse token. This model can carry up to three tokens at any time. During its activation, this model can spend corpse tokens to make additional melee attacks or to boost melee attack or melee damage rolls. It can make one additional attack or boost one roll for each token spent.
  • Rapid Healing - When this model is damaged by an enemy attack, immediately after the attack is resolved remove d3 damage points from it.
  • Treewalker - This model ignores forests when determining LOS. While completely within a forest, this model gains +2 DEF against melee attacks rolls.
  • Unyielding - This model gains +2 ARM against melee damage rolls.

Weapons

Sword icon.jpg  RNG   POW   P+S

  • Brutal Charge - This model gains +2 to charge attack damage rolls with this weapon.
  • Smite (★ Attack) - The model hit is slammed d6" directly away from this model. If the model hit has a larger base than the attacking model, it is moved only half the distance rolled. The POW of collateral damage is equal to the STR of this model.

Thoughts on Kogan the Exile

Kogan the Exile in a nutshell

Kogan hits like a heavy - his charge is a P+S 18 smiting attack, and if he's triggered Heart Eater somehow he can get extra follow-up attacks. And that's why you take him - he hits really hard, slamming as he does.

He hits very hard but he isn’t much tougher than standard Tharn Ravagers against ranged attacks, while costing more than 2 of them. Delivering him to bash in some faces will always be the tricky bit. Since the 2021.10 dynamic update he can't be taken as a Requisition option anymore so you need to make him worth his 6 points cost.

His game plan isn’t overly complicated - charge in hard and fast and either wreck infantry or if you are stocked up on corpses go after something heavier, your output is insane.

Because he is a Partisan in circle he fits in every theme if you are willing to give up your minion solo. Bones of Orboros lacks any models that can collect corpses but often runs a Well of Orboros while not the best choice for every situation it does offer something a bit different for a theme with no dedicated combat solos

Combos & Synergies

Circle

  • The Devourer's Host gives him a free heart. He also doesn't use up a minion slot and counts as a ravager.
  • Wurmwood makes trees and debuffs enemies.
  • Iona the Unseen and the Tharn Ravager White Mane give bonuses to their fellow Tharn.
  • Baldur the Stonesoul - putting a wall template behind a model you are smiting allows for collateral damage. His feat also makes him Arm19 vs range and arm 21 vs melee. Which is hopefully enough to see him to the frontlines.
  • Baldur the Stonecleaver anything that can be said about how he combos with normal Tharn Ravagers can be repeated here, forests, blast resistance and no knockdown + tough are all great.
  • Well of Orboros available in any theme the Well can always hand out corpses with its gun.

Minions

  • He's a decent free option for Azazello in Will Work for Food. He gets pretty scary under his feat and/or Storm Rager and Beacon gives him some extra inches on the charge. Riposte while sitting in a forest can make a great defensive piece with slams galore.
  • Ledfoot & Tredz let him Ride Along for 2" and love it when he smites something so they get to Trash it afterwards.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • A boosted POW 12 can one-shot him on average rolls, and he's expensive.
    • If you want raw damage output in circle get Brighid & Caul for 1 point more. If you are taking Kogan you need to be slamming.
  • Other than offering slams his power and output isn’t that different from a normal Tharn Male.

Tricks & Tips

  • read up on how slams work his amazing slamming axe is the majority of his kit

Rules Clarifications

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification:  : Partisan      (Edit)
(Click Expand to read)

Which Faction am I?
  • Partisans are Mercenary (or Minion) models unless they're taken in their "Home" Faction. For example, a Mercenary model that is Partisan [Cygnar]:
    • When used in most armies it is "friendly Faction" only to other Mercenary models.
    • When used in a Cygnar army it is "friendly Faction" to Cygnar models ... and stops being "friendly Faction" to any other Mercenaries in that Cygnar army.
  • In a multi-caster game, Partisans count as the main army's Faction and not as a Mercenary models (if playing a Faction other than Mercaneries). (Infernal Ruling)

Attachments

  • If a Partisan unit can get a special attachment from their Partisan Faction (for instance a Soulless Escort or Trollkin Sorcerer) then they can only get that attachment when they're in the Partisan Faction. They can't take it when working as a regular Mercenary. (Locked thread)
  • When taken in their Partisan Faction, they can't have a Ranking Officer attached.

Partisan warcasters

  • If you have a Partisan caster, you must choose whether your army is a Mercenary force or a [Partisan Faction] force. What warjacks the caster can take are then limited by your choice.
  • Partisan casters can be taken in [Partisan Faction] theme forces. Refer to the main rulebook.
  • Partisan casters can be fielded in multiple-caster games. (Locked thread)
See also the Category: Partisan for what happens if you mix and match Partisan casters and Merc casters in multi-caster games.

Partisans & Theme Forces (Edit)

  • Partisans are Mercenary/Minion models, so there are two ways you can add them to a theme force:
    1. Freely: If the Partisan is on the list of allowed models, then you can take as many as you want plus another Mercenary unit/solo. (Infernal Ruling)
They can be explicitly allowed (for example Jaws of the Wolf allows "Kayazy models/units" so Partisan Kayayz can be used freely).
They can be implicitly allowed (for example Scourge of the Broken Coast allows "living Cryx models/units" and Partisan Cephalyx fit that criteria, so they can be used freely). (Infernal Ruling)
    2. Limited: If the Partisan isn't on the list of allowed models, it does use up your "Up to one Mercenary/Minion" slot, so you can only have the one.
  • Whether you used option 1 or 2 above, once they're in your theme force they count as a Faction model and so:
    • They can be taken as a Requistion Option (if they fit the Requistion description).
For example Lanyssa can be taken as a free solo in the Legion of Dawn theme. (Infernal Ruling)
    • They will get any theme benefit that they fit the description for.
For example Storm Division gives all Cygnar models Immunity Electricity, so Partisan Mercs in that theme get immunity too.
For example Nemo4's Mechaniks get Reposition [3] in Heavy Metal. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Pathfinder      (Edit)

Rules Clarification : Tough - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Heart Eater      (Edit)

  • The attacker needs to be the closest eligible model. For instance if you destroy a Mechanithrall from 2" away but a Necrosurgeon is in B2B with it, the Necrosurgeon will get the corpse.
  • Units Buying Attacks (Edit)
    • If you make attacks with model [A], then start making attacks with model [B], you cannot 'go back' and buy more attacks with [A]. Because:
    • A model can only buy additional attacks during its Combat Action.
    • A model in a unit must complete its Combat Action before the next model starts theirs (with some exceptions, like CMA).
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Rapid Healing      (Edit)

  • A warlock with Rapid Healing can transfer damage to a warbeast, then still trigger Rapid Healing because they're still considered to have been damaged.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Treewalker      (Edit)

  • Treewalker does not ignore forest's concealment bonus.
  • The DEF bonus doesn't stack with the "intervening terrain vs melee attackers" bonus, because forests don't count as intervening terrain. (Infernal Ruling)

Rules Clarification : Unyielding - None yet. (Edit)

RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Powerful Charge  and/or Brutal Charge     (Edit)

  • If you declare a charge but move less than 3", then the attack doesn't count as a "Charge Attack" and you won't get the bonus.
RC symbol.png

Rules Clarification : Smite      (Edit)

  • This rule changed in Mk3 to no longer say it "adds the weapon's POW". It still does add the POW, however, because the whole section on calculating Slam damage was reworded in the main rulebook.
  • Smite is not a Power Attack Slam, it is just an attack which causes a model to be slammed. As such, you can smite friendly models.
  • You can trigger Critical Smite on a free strike.
  • If you Smite on a charge, then the slam damage will be boosted.
  • Chain Attack Smite only - Unlile the other versions of Smite, a Chain Attack one doesn't have the distance halved when a smaller base model smites a larger. The Knights Exemplar Seneschal is just that awesome.
  • See also the clarifications on being slammed
